During our tremendously successful Tomato Club 2025 season, we discovered these tomato grating plates are extremely popular throughout Italy and Spain. They are used for removing the flesh from the skins of heirloom tomatoes, creating an instant squeezed tomato juice/pulp for passata recipes, or for classic soups and Middle Eastern dishes like tabbouleh and banadoura. 

In the Summer, we really love making Pan Con Tomate, the famous Spanish snack of garlic-rubbed toast topped with chopped tomatoes, sea salt and good olive oil. Simply halve a tomato and rub the cut side concentrically around the rough centre, and the tomato will be broken up in no time. Then you simply spoon the tomato straight onto your garlic-y toast, dress and season, and away you go. The smooshers would make a lovely gift for the tomato lover in your life, and will last a lifetime if gently hand-washed after use.

These attractive Tomato "Smooshers" (we honestly couldn’t think of a better or more fitting name!) have been lovingly handcrafted by our own Stephen, a keen ceramicist, from basalt-flecked stoneware clay, dug in South Staffordshire. Every one is unique due to the many nuances of the artisan methods used. Each smoosher has been hand-carved to produce the grooves for removing the skins from the flesh of juicy ‘paste’ tomatoes, and is finished with a deep blue celadon glaze. Whilst not washing-machine friendly, the smooshers simply require a quick dip in warm soapy water to clean.

Comes complete with a Tomato Serrated Knife.
